The Sulphur Mountain area in Banff National Park is a haven for wildlife, offering sightings of a variety of animals that thrive in this rugged alpine environment.

Mountain Goats

One of the most iconic animals in the area, mountain goats are well-suited to the steep and rocky slopes of Sulphur Mountain. Known for their agility, they often traverse rugged cliffs with ease. You might spot them on the slopes or rocky ledges, their white coats standing out against the terrain.

Bighorn Sheep

Bighorn sheep are also common around Sulphur Mountain, often seen in groups. Males, known for their large, curled horns, can be spotted grazing along the mountain trails or even around the visitor areas near the gondola. They’re adapted to the high-altitude environment and are known for their impressive climbing abilities.

Grizzly Bears and Black Bears

While less common at the summit itself, both grizzly bears and black bears inhabit the surrounding forests and valleys of Banff National Park. Bear sightings are more likely at lower elevations, particularly in spring and early summer when they come down to forage for food. Always maintain a safe distance and be bear-aware when hiking or exploring.

Elk

Elk are frequently spotted in the valleys around Sulphur Mountain, particularly in the lower forested areas near Banff. They are more often seen in the mornings and evenings, especially in autumn during the rutting season, when male elk can be heard bugling to attract mates.

Mule Deer and White-Tailed Deer

Deer are also common in the area, with mule deer and white-tailed deer being the most frequently seen. They tend to be more visible at lower elevations and near forested edges, feeding on shrubs and vegetation. Their agility allows them to navigate the hilly terrain around the mountain.

Hoary Marmots

These large ground squirrels, also known as “whistle pigs,” are often found near Sulphur Mountain’s summit. They live among the rocky slopes and are known for their high-pitched warning calls. They’re usually active during the summer months, preparing for a long hibernation that lasts throughout the winter.

Golden Eagles and Other Birds of Prey

Sulphur Mountain’s high elevation is a great spot for spotting birds of prey. Golden eagles, bald eagles, and hawks can often be seen soaring at these heights, taking advantage of the thermals to glide effortlessly. They prey on smaller animals in the park and are a beautiful sight against the mountain backdrop.

Clark's Nutcracker

This distinctive bird with gray and black plumage is commonly seen at high elevations, including Sulphur Mountain. They play an important role in the ecosystem by spreading whitebark pine seeds, a crucial food source for other wildlife.

Pikas

These small, rabbit-like creatures live in the rocky areas of Sulphur Mountain and can be spotted darting around boulders. Pikas are known for their “haymaking” behavior, gathering and drying vegetation to store as winter food.

Squirrels and Chipmunks

Various species of squirrels and chipmunks inhabit the forests and higher elevations around Sulphur Mountain. They’re active during the summer and autumn months, storing food to sustain them through the winter.

Sulphur Mountain's diverse array of animals adds an enriching, wild element to the breathtaking views and landscapes of Banff National Park.
