Terminal Decks

The terminal decks are especially memorable in clear weather when the visibility stretches across numerous peaks and distant valleys. Whether visiting in the bright light of midday, the soft glow of morning, or the warm tones of evening sunlight, these elevated platforms provide one of the most accessible and impressive vantage points overlooking Banff and the surrounding Canadian Rockies.

Terminal Decks

The terminal decks at the summit of the Banff Gondola are the large outdoor viewing areas that surround the upper gondola station on Sulphur Mountain. After stepping out of the gondola cabins and exiting the upper terminal building, visitors can access several open-air decks that extend along the mountainside. These elevated platforms are designed to give guests immediate access to sweeping mountain scenery while providing safe, spacious areas to walk, stand, and take in the views.
From the terminal decks, the landscape unfolds dramatically in multiple directions. Looking outward from the railings, visitors can see the Bow Valley stretching below with the town of Banff nestled among forests and rivers. Beyond the valley, layers of mountain ranges rise across the horizon, creating a panoramic scene that changes with the time of day and shifting light. The height of the decks makes the perspective especially striking, as guests stand high above the valley floor.
The decks are built with wide walking areas and sturdy railings so visitors can comfortably move around and find different viewpoints. Some sections provide unobstructed sightlines for photography, while others offer space to pause and enjoy the alpine air. Because the decks wrap around parts of the upper terminal, walking along them reveals slightly different angles of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
These outdoor areas also serve as gathering points where visitors can orient themselves before exploring the rest of the summit. From the decks, people can easily see the start of the boardwalk leading toward Sanson's Peak, as well as the surrounding patios and mountain ridges. Many guests spend time here right after arriving at the summit, taking their first look at the expansive Rocky Mountain scenery.
