Past in The Valley

The Bow Valley surrounding Banff holds a long and layered human history that stretches back thousands of years. Long before modern roads, railways, or mountain towns appeared, the valley served as a natural travel corridor through the Rocky Mountains. Indigenous peoples moved through the region following wildlife migrations, seasonal plant growth, and trade routes that connected different areas of the mountains and plains. The valley floor, with its rivers, open meadows, and access to mountain passes, provided an ideal route for travel and gathering.
Early inhabitants developed a deep understanding of the valley's seasonal rhythms. Herds of elk, deer, and bighorn sheep moved through the open grasslands and forest edges, and hunters followed these animals across the landscape. The surrounding mountains offered shelter, fresh water, and natural resources such as berries, roots, and medicinal plants. Camps were often established near rivers or sheltered areas where people could take advantage of both the valley's wildlife and its abundant natural resources.
The Bow River itself played a central role in life in the valley. Flowing through the heart of the region, it provided fresh water and helped shape the landscape over thousands of years. Riverbanks and nearby meadows were often gathering places where people could fish, collect plants, and rest during longer journeys through the mountains. Trails gradually formed along these natural routes, creating early pathways that later explorers and settlers would also follow.
In the nineteenth century, European explorers and surveyors began traveling through the valley as interest in the western mountains grew. Railway construction soon followed, opening the region to travelers from across Canada and beyond. The discovery of mineral hot springs near the base of Sulphur Mountain drew particular attention, eventually leading to the protection of the surrounding area and the establishment of Canada's first national park.
With the arrival of tourism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Banff gradually developed into a mountain destination. Hotels, hiking trails, and transportation routes were built to help visitors experience the dramatic scenery of the valley and surrounding peaks. Despite these changes, much of the valley's natural character has remained intact, preserving the forests, rivers, and wildlife that shaped its earliest human history.
When visitors look across the Bow Valley from mountain viewpoints or travel along its roads and trails, they are seeing a landscape that has supported human life for millennia. Beneath the modern town and visitor facilities lies a much older story of travel, survival, and connection with the mountain environment that defined the valley long before it became known as Banff.
