Hiking Trails at the Summit

At the summit of the Banff Gondola on Sulphur Mountain, visitors can enjoy several short hiking routes and walking paths that allow them to explore the high alpine ridge beyond the main terminal area. These trails provide an opportunity to experience the mountain environment more closely while still remaining within a well-marked and accessible summit zone.
The most popular route is the Sulphur Mountain boardwalk trail that begins just outside the upper terminal. This elevated wooden walkway follows the crest of the ridge and gradually leads visitors toward Sanson's Peak. Although technically a structured boardwalk rather than a traditional dirt trail, the route offers a true mountaintop walking experience. Along the way, guests pass over rocky alpine terrain while enjoying wide views of the Bow Valley, surrounding mountain ranges, and the distant town of Banff below. The walk is gentle and manageable for most visitors, with sections of stairs and viewing platforms that invite frequent stops for photographs and sightseeing.
At the end of the boardwalk, visitors reach Sanson's Peak, where a small historic structure once used for meteorological observations stands near the summit viewpoint. This area offers one of the highest vantage points along the ridge and provides expansive views across the Canadian Rockies. Many guests pause here to take in the scenery before returning along the same boardwalk route to the gondola terminal.
Beyond the boardwalk area, the summit ridge also connects with backcountry hiking routes that extend further along Sulphur Mountain. These trails move away from the main visitor area and enter more rugged terrain. While they offer a quieter and more adventurous mountain experience, they are generally suited to experienced hikers who are prepared for alpine conditions.
For many visitors, the boardwalk hike to Sanson's Peak provides the ideal balance between accessibility and exploration. It allows guests to walk along the very spine of the mountain, surrounded by sweeping Rocky Mountain scenery, while still remaining close to the facilities and services of the Banff Gondola summit complex.
