Hiking One Way Ticket

At the Banff Gondola on Sulphur Mountain, visitors have the option of hiking the mountain trail in one direction and using the gondola for the other portion of the journey. A common choice is to hike up the Sulphur Mountain trail and then purchase a one-way gondola ticket to ride back down. This option allows hikers to enjoy the full mountain climb while saving their knees from the long descent.
The Sulphur Mountain trail begins near the lower gondola terminal and climbs steadily through forested slopes toward the summit. The path follows a well-maintained series of switchbacks that gradually gain elevation as hikers move up the mountainside. Along the way, there are occasional viewpoints where hikers can see across the Bow Valley and toward the surrounding peaks. The trail is long and consistently uphill, making it a rewarding climb for those who want to experience the mountain at a slower pace than the gondola ride.
After reaching the summit area, hikers arrive near the gondola's upper terminal where wide patios, viewing decks, and the summit boardwalk provide places to rest and enjoy the panoramic scenery. From there, hikers can enter the gondola terminal and purchase a one-way ticket for the ride back down the mountain. The descent by gondola offers a relaxing return while providing sweeping views over the forested slopes that were climbed earlier in the day.
Some visitors also choose the opposite approach by riding the gondola to the summit and hiking down the trail afterward. This option is less common because the long downhill descent can be harder on the legs, but it still provides a scenic hiking experience through the mountain forest.
The one-way ticket option makes the Sulphur Mountain experience flexible for hikers. It allows visitors to combine a traditional mountain hike with the convenience of the gondola, creating a trip that includes both physical adventure and a comfortable ride above the spectacular landscape of Banff National Park.
