Enjoy Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk

Walking the Sulphur Mountain boardwalk is one of the most memorable parts of visiting the summit of the Banff Gondola. The wooden pathway begins just beyond the upper terminal and gently winds its way along the ridge of Sulphur Mountain toward Sanson's Peak. Elevated slightly above the rocky alpine terrain, the boardwalk provides a clear and safe route across the mountaintop while allowing visitors to experience the open mountain environment in a natural and immersive way.
As guests step onto the boardwalk, the scenery immediately opens in every direction. To one side, the sweeping Bow Valley stretches far below with the town of Banff nestled among dense forests and winding river channels. On the other side, dramatic Rocky Mountain peaks rise sharply into the sky, their ridges and slopes creating a layered panorama that changes as you progress along the walkway. The steady elevation along the ridge means the views remain expansive the entire time.
The walk itself is comfortable and gradual, with a series of wooden steps and platforms guiding visitors along the crest of the mountain. The crisp alpine air, combined with the quiet sounds of wind moving through the high slopes, creates a peaceful atmosphere that encourages people to slow their pace and take in the surroundings. Along the way, interpretive displays and scenic stopping points invite visitors to pause and learn about the mountain's history, geology, and the early meteorological station that once operated on the peak.
Reaching the end of the boardwalk at Sanson's Peak offers another rewarding viewpoint. From here, the perspective widens even further, giving visitors a commanding view across the Bow Valley and toward distant ranges of the Canadian Rockies. Many guests linger here to take photos, watch shifting clouds and sunlight over the mountains, or simply appreciate the feeling of standing high above the landscape.
The Sulphur Mountain boardwalk adds an adventurous and exploratory element to the Banff Gondola experience. Rather than only observing the view from a patio or observation deck, visitors are able to walk along the very spine of the mountain, enjoying a sense of movement and discovery while surrounded by the dramatic beauty of the Rockies.
