Boardwalk Altitude Finish

At the summit of Sulphur Mountain, the boardwalk leads visitors along a ridge toward its highest accessible point, finishing near Sanson’s Peak. By the time you reach the end of the boardwalk, you are standing at roughly 2,451 metres (about 8,041 feet) above sea level, which is the highest point reached by visitors through the Banff Gondola experience. This elevation is noticeably higher than the gondola’s upper terminal building, so the walk along the boardwalk gradually brings you up to the true summit of the ridge.
As you move along the wooden walkway, the altitude gain is subtle but steady. The boardwalk climbs gently with a series of stairs and platforms that follow the narrow mountain crest. Each section rises slightly higher than the last, and by the time you arrive at the final viewing area near the historic weather station site, you are standing at the top of the ridge with an uninterrupted view in nearly every direction.
Reaching the finish of the boardwalk at this altitude gives visitors a unique sense of perspective. From over 2,400 metres above sea level, the surrounding peaks appear almost level with your viewpoint, while the Bow Valley sits far below. The air often feels cooler and thinner, and the expansive mountain scenery stretches across layers of distant ranges, emphasizing just how high the summit of Sulphur Mountain rises above the Banff townsite.
